Snow day today! This was outside my window while I curled up with a cat and some magazines. So luxurious to not have to go out in the bad weather. Especially when my husband nobly went out to shovel while I was napping. My hero! . . . → Read More: Snow Day Sunday

We’ve been having a stretch of cold weather here in Washington, like so many other parts of the country. Nothing too horrible here, just a string of nights below 20 degrees and days that haven’t made it up above the freezing mark. Not very impressive if you live in Minneapolis, or upstate New York. Still, this is colder weather than we’ve had for a few winters. I’m afraid the rosemary shrub outside in my herb garden is probably done for by now. . . . → Read More: Surviving the Cold, Soaking up the Sun

One thing I’ve learned in my 41 years, whenever the news programs introduce a story with an admonition that “some viewers may find this material disturbing,†they mean ME. . . . → Read More: Viewer Discretion Advised

Yesterday my husband and I drove up to Downingtown, Pennsylvania on a one-day trip. Our visit was for the annual meeting of investors in Victory Brewing Company, a craft brewery that’s probably best known for its Hop Devil and Golden Monkey beers. What draws most people to visit Victory is the chance to sample the full range of their many beers. There are usually at least eight to ten beers on tap at the restaurant, in a lineup that changes seasonally. Victory has won multiple awards for their flagship Hop Devil beer, an India Pale Ale. They’re also increasingly famous for a Belgian-style beer called Golden Monkey and for their pilsner, Prima Pils. Prima was recognized as one of the best pilsner-style beers in the world by both the New York Times and Men’s Journal magazine in 2005. . . . → Read More: Victory Beer

Happy new year! No, I haven’t lost track of the calendar. It’s just that this time of year has always seemed like the natural time for beginning new work. I suppose it’s a holdover from my many years of school, but the first Tuesday after Labor Day feels like time to buckle down, . . . → Read More: September New Year

I consider myself a fairly brave person. I’m not afraid of heights, spiders, snakes, or the number 13. I like the outdoors and I love to tackle new handstands and forearm balances in my yoga practice. Anyone who knows me will tell you I’m not afraid to speak up in public. But I do . . . → Read More: A Cricket on the Hearth

Finally, after more than three weeks of chaotic conditions, my household is returning to normal. Or what passes for normal around here, anyway. I’m happy to report that our carpet and padding were saved, and we were able to put it all back down after thoroughly drying it out from the flood. We’re quite . . . → Read More: Back to Normal

Here in Washington we have all just survived a four-day rainstorm that was virtually biblical in proportion. For four days that felt like forty, water poured from the skies in unbelievable quantities. Plenty of it found its way into my finished basement, unfortunately.
Perhaps I was unforgivably out of touch, but I had . . . → Read More: 40 Days and 40 Nights
